Listening
Music is an aural art! Printed music is wonderful and necessary, but concepts of style and tone can only truly be conveyed from one musician to another, by ear and demonstration. Listen to flutists, but also listen to vocalists and violinists. Specific artists will be recommended for listening. Pandora.com is a great place to get started!
